Songs that you didn’t know were written by Olamide

Wednesday, July 07, 2021

The Nigerian music industry is a perfect example of the phrase “Soldier go, Soldier Come”, as the elders in the game who were once dominating the industry fade out slowly, the young and hungry artists are constantly showing their willingness and ability to take up their place.

But some artists have remained relevant and at the top for years in the fiercely competitive Nigerian music industry. One of such artists is YBNL Nation boss, Olamide. In over 10 years in the industry, the indigenous rapper has metamorphosed from the local rapper that he once categorized himself as to become a global superstar, serving up hit songs like ‘Rock’, ‘Infinity’, ‘Triumphant’, ‘Woske’, ‘Motigbana’, that appeal to local and international clubs/dancehalls.

One thing that Olamide will always be remembered for is how he puts people on through free/unexpected collaborations (like in the case of Bella Shmurda ‘s Vision 2020, Zlatan ‘My Body’, featuring Layydoe and upcoming acts on his album), record deals (like Adekunle Gold, Lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun, Fireboy DML), record label affiliation (Picazo, Yomi Blaze, Limerick), or writing songs for others.

Below are some hit songs that you probably didn’t know were written by Olamide.

(1) Tiwa Savage – 49-99

Tiwa Savage’s first 2019 single ’49-99′ was almost completely written by Olamide. Tiwa Savage revealed this during her Genius Verified session.

According to Tiwa Savage, the song was already done before she heard it and she just came in and added a little thing and made little changes.

(2) Akon – Bottom

When Akon released his album ‘Akonda’, fans were surprised to hear him sing in both Pidgin and Yoruba in the song ‘Bottom’ off the album. Turns out, our very own Olamide was behind the song lyrics. The news was confirmed by the hit-maker when a fan pointed it out on Twitter saying “Olamide wrote “Bottom” for Akon. We don’t deserve this legend.” To which Olamide replied with the praying hands’ emoji in thanks.

(3) Teni – Injure Me

Dr Dolor Entertainment songstress, Teni has also benefited from Olamide’s benevolence as her 2021 hit song ‘Injure Me’ was also co-written by the YBNL Nation boss, Olamide.

The song is taken off Teni’s debut studio album ‘Wondaland’ and the production credit goes to Pheelz.

(4) Zlatan ft. Davido & Mayorkun – Cho Cho

Lest we may forget, Olamide played a huge role in bringing Zlatan into the limelight in the early days of his career. Olamide gave Zlatan his first hit song after he featured in the record ‘My Body’ for free back in 2017.

Shortly after Zlatan released his 2021 first single ‘Cho Cho’, Mayorkun & Zlatan linked up at Davido’s crib where they premiered the song on Davido’s Instagram live. During the live session, Davido revealed that Olamide co-wrote the song.

(5) Tiwa Savage – Owo Mi Dah

Once again, Tiwa Savage is a beneficiary of Olamide’s songwriting prowess. It is safe to say that Olamide made Tiwa Savage’s 2019 career run a successful one as he wrote 2 (49-99 & Owo Mi Dah) out of the 3 singles that Tiwa Savage released in 2019.
