Zidane ‘identifies RB Leipzig defender Upamecano as replacement for Ramos

Zinedine Zidane has identified Dayot Upamecano as the long-term replacement for Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid.

The RB Leipzig defender is one of the most highly-valued young centre-backs in world football and stole the show for the Bundesliga side during their 2-1 Champions League victory over Real’s rivals Atletico Madrid,

Now AS have reported the 21-year-old’s performance in the Champions League has convinced Zidane that Upamecano will be the right man for Real Madrid.

However the club are not planning to spend big during the summer transfer window and wouldn’t be able to pay his £41m release clause until next year.

Los Blancos could face a fight on their hands next summer with several top European clubs likely to be interested in the talented youngster.

Upamecano committed his future to the club just earlier this summer extending his contract with the Champions League semi-finalists until 2023.

One good piece of news for any potential suitors is the Frenchman’s releause clause was actually lowered with his new contract, as it originally exceeded £54m.

Zidane sees Upamecano as a man for the future with club Sergio Ramos now 34-years-old.

The Galacticos do also have 27-year-old Raphael Varane and 22-year-old Eder Militao so are in no rush to buy a centre-back.

However they are aware that require a new defender to be the long-term replacement for Ramos.

Upamecano was heavily praised for his performance against Atletico Madrid showing he was quick, strong and very assured in possession.

He marked Diego Costa out of the game with BT Sport pundits Jermaine Jenas saying ‘it was no point Costa even being there’ and Rio Ferdinand saying Upamecano ‘manhandled the 31-year-old Spaniard.

Against Atletico Madrid he walked away clutching with Man of the Match trophy and there were no arguments.

Upamecano finished with a 100 per cent dribble and tackle success rate after 99 touches.

He had a 92 per cent passing accuracy just to add even more shine to his performance.
